The growth of P/M aluminum structural parts in the automotive market is creating opportunities for lightweight alloys in cost-effective, high volume applications. Successful implementation and acceptance of aluminum cam caps by the automotive industry is spurring work on P/M aluminum alloys using the conventional press/sinter/repress process. The effect of alloying additions on metallurgical changes and on the P/M process are considered, and the compositions and properties of the common aluminum alloys are reviewed. Aluminum P/M is assessed in relation to the availability of raw materials for current and potential products and markets.
